Individual Deminer Protection and Tools
Although technology development promises to vastly
increase the safety and efficiency of demining operations, the most common
method still in use today is manual demining. Small, low cost equipment
aids are needed to assist individuals engaged in manual demining operations.
Based on test results from FY1995 and 1996, improvements were made to
the Rigid Marking Foam, Blast and Fragment Containers, Air
Spade, and Mine Marking System. FY 1997 efforts included development
of the Universal Power Manager and the beginning of an important
effort in the area of Personal Protection Equipment. This included improved
helmets, visors, body armor, and footwear for deminers. The Department
of Defense Humanitarian Demining R&D Program continues to investigate
improvements to the manual demining process. This area will continue to
be an important element of the Humanitarian Demining R&D Program.
