MgM Rotar

MgM Rotar

Objective
Provide a capability to sift mines from soil.

Description
The MgM Rotar is an armored vehicle system for safely excavating and sifting mine contaminated soils. The system is constructed from a commercially available rubble sifter, modified and mounted on a mine protected front end loader. The system picks up a bucket load of soil and closes a cage around the contents. The soil is then tumbled by rotating the cage, separating all contaminants smaller than the grid size. The loader is moved out of the hazardous area and the cage opened. The sifted contents are spread on the ground in a predesignated area or blast-protected container for visual inspection by deminers. The system can withstand explosions from both blast and fragmentation AP mines with minimal damage.

Performance
In tests against surrogate mines in Namibia, the MgM Rotar demonstrated a 99% clearance capability in one test that was certified by Price-Waterhouse. In another test, the system also cleared 14 live AP mines from two mined berms next to powerline pylons. These berms had previously been declared mine free by commercial contractors. The Namibian Defence Forces certified the MgM clearance (combined process including the Rotar) of the pylon berms at the 99.6% United Nations clearance standard.

Limitations

  • The system is limited to use in areas where the front loader can operate.
  • Highly cohesive and vegetated soils may not sift effectively.
  • Large blast mines, in particular AT, may damage the Rotar.

Status

The prototype system has undergone extensive testing in Namibia and additional systems could be produced in a relatively short period of time.
